ABOUT SSG Tactical

A new approach to security

SSG Tactical has pioneered a new approach to public security designed to protect you in your home and at your place of business. Called Public Space Policing, our innovative methodology is designed to safeguard you, your family and your business by securing the community that surrounds you.

What is Public Space Policing all about?

Public Space Policing coordinates our resources with those of the community, South African Police Service, Metro Police and the town council. By sharing information and working in partnership with other organisations involved in public security, we are better able to prevent incidences of crime in the communities where we operate.

What systems are behind Public Space Policing?

SSG has made a significant investment in building a Client Service Centre (CSC) that is powered by the best technology available in the global security industry. We use the same intelligence gathering and investigative software that is used by security agencies such as the New Scotland Yard Police, the FBI, the CIA and the South African Hawks.

Our alarm management systems, long-range radio transmitters, and vehicle monitoring are all world-class. We also have systems in place to automate occurrence books, guard monitoring and guard rosters. The CSC nerve centre ensures that we have real-time insight into everything that happens in the communities where we operate.

Choosing the best through our rigorous employment process

Every person employed by SSG goes through a comprehensive interview process and extensive background check before a job is offered.

We verify all candidates' identity and certifications at the outset of the recruitment process and undertake a fingerprint check to ensure they have no criminal records or outstanding police cases against their names.

Each candidate must also pass a basic aptitude test to ensure he or she can communicate effectively with clients verbally and in writing. Employees that will work at our Client Service Centre (CSC) or who will handle firearms are expected to pass stress tests to ensure that they have the right temperament to be calm and efficient in high-pressure situations.

All final employment decisions are made by senior managers to ensure that we choose only the best people to serve our clients.

Our Armed Response service

Our carefully-chosen Armed Response guards are provided with the very best equipment and vehicles to ensure that they can be effective in the field. They are outfitted with a range of quality equipment including SABS-approved bulletproof jackets, vehicle-mounted and handheld two-way radios, cellphones, ladders, traffic cones, torches, and more.

Guards are constantly patrolling to ensure they are visible enough to discourage criminal activity. All guards go through shooting practice and fitness tests once a month to ensure that they are ready for any situation they may encounter.

Access control points and boom gate entrances

SSG only employs Grade C officers to operate access control points and boom gates. The guards at all of these posts are equipped with two-way radios and stay in touch with all Tactical Armed Response vehicles, the Client Service Centre and each other 24 hours a day.

Each access point is equipped with a remote panic button. Should the guard hit the panic button, a signal is sent to all Tactical Armed Response Vehicles, senior management and the Client Service Centre simultaneously. Once every hour, the response vehicle will visit each access point and boom gate in the area.

Investigators on call

Finally, we have a team of expert investigators on call 24 hours a day. They are dispatched whenever an incident takes place at a client's premises and ensure that evidence is properly collected and never compromised.

Our investigators work hand in hand with all enforcement agencies and maintain daily contact with them in all cases they investigate. All the data of the cases is captured into our state of the art Memex system (www.memex.com) to ensure maximum benefit and quick turnaround times and arrests.

Invitation

We invite all clients as well as the public to visit our offices at Block D, Tripark Office Park, 17 Eastern Service Road Kelvin, Sandton, (S26°04'50.3" E28°05'22.4") to view our facilities and enjoy a cup of the best coffee in Johannesburg with us!

SSG Tactical Combines Two Crime Fighting Elements In One Ioeration (03 October 2011)
SSG Tactical has always prioritised going well beyond providing a mere armed response service when it comes to protecting people and properties. Securing communities is about two elements in the crime‐fighting mix, in particular. These are a commitment to proactive public space policing and the ability of private and public law enforcement entities to work together in pursuit of a joint crime reduction goal.

SSG Tactical showed that it is more than capable of delivering on both fronts when it conducted a proactive anti-crime operation in Edenvale recently in collaboration with not only the SAPS and EMPD but also with the assistance of two other private security organisations.

Because alcohol plays such a large part in criminal activity in South Africa, the focus of the operation was on raiding illegally‐operated taverns that had no licenses allowing the consumption or sale of alcohol on their premises. After launching the operation at 18h00 at the Edenvale SAPS, a convoy of vehicles carrying a determined and dedicated group of individuals rolled out of the police station after being briefed by the Station Commissioner.

The first of the illegal shebeens to be raided was at the corner of Van Riebeek and 9th Street. No license could be presented by the owner who had to watch helplessly as his stash of illegal alcohol was rightfully confiscated. Perhaps next time he will obey the law or risk again losing a substantial amount of stock – and potentially his liberty. After the patrons left, the liquor was placed in the EMPD stores in Edenvale.

The convoy then proceeded to the corner of Smith and Terrace Streets where a roadblock was established and ten people were arrested for drunken driving. They were transported to Edenvale SAPS to be detained after tests revealed they were over the legal driving limit.

After processing all the arrested individuals, the joint SSG Tactical, EMPD, SAPS and private security firm task team proceeded to one final port of call known to be a hive of illegal activity. It was alleged that drugs were being sold by Nigerian nationals. However, the team could not find any illegal drugs after searching patrons who had clearly hidden their stashes.

As 02h00 arrived, the operation was concluded after a very successful night.

SAPS, SSG Cooperation nets drug dealer (12 September 2011)
Ask anyone involved in law enforcement in South Africa today and they will tell you that illegal drugs play a massive role in fuelling crime.

Not only are a significant number of criminals under the influence of illegal drugs when they commit their nefarious deeds, but an entire illegal subculture exists to support the drug trade.

The strong and undeniable link between illegal drugs and crime makes combatting the trade a number one priority for public and private law enforcement alike. The SAPS and SSG have collaborated on literally dozens of anti-crime operations resulting in hundreds of arrests over the years. Cooperation in the fight against illegal drugs is a big part of this public private sector partnership.

Yesterday, the Edenvale SAPS and SSG Tactical staked out a known drug dealing spot on Voortrekker Road. The alleged drug pusher was so brazen that he did not even realise he was conducting his business right in front of the SAPS and SSG personnel who were watching the entire deal go down from their cars. Once the deal was concluded the SAPS and SSG officers allighted from their vehicles and attempted to arrest the alleged dealer who fled on foot. Illustrating the importance of ongoing physical fitness and other training, the officers were able to apprehend the suspect after a chase on foot of over two city blocks.

Two bags of cat and 33 ecstasy tablets were found in his immediate possession and after interrogation by the SAPS members at the local police station, the suspect supplied the address of a flat nearby. A raid was conducted and 98 dagga cigarettes and a big bag of the drug were found.

The alleged drug dealer, a forgein national from West Africa, is currently in SAPS custody awaiting trial.

SSG leaves no stone unturned in search for client in trouble (13 June 2011)
SSG Tactical's response team showed how far it would go to locate a client in trouble during a recent incident in Essexwold near Bedfordview. The client in question was visiting a friend’s home near his own house when he got caught up in a shooting incident.

The two men were talking in the garden when they noticed five suspects in the house. One of the housebreakers opened fire on the SSG client and his friend through the window. The two men took shelter in a locked room in the garage and phoned SSG.

The client was cut off before he could give the address to the SSG control room operator. SSG however, started searching for him by contacting the police and other security companies in the area. His landline number was tracked down in the SSG database through his cellphone number and a call was placed to his wife.

He was extremely impressed that SSG tracked him down in such a short time with so little information. SSG found that the SAPS and Top Security had arrived on the scene to help the two men. No property was reported stolen and no one was injured in the incident.

Said Zybrand Kruger, General Manager SSG Tactical: "This is proof that our public space policing approach works. When clients are in trouble, we will use every resource at our disposal to find them, wherever they are."

 SSG's hands-on approach to crime fighting (2 June 2011)
In this day and age, it is not uncommon to hear of organisations where executives are so far removed from day-to-day operations that they do not even know their employees' names, let alone the names of their clients.

Not so with SSG where top management readily joins the fight against crime at a very operational level. This was demonstrated recently when a senior SSG General Manager was the first person to engage alleged hijackers in Edenvale yesterday.

An alert SSG client pushed their panic button on Monday morning after realizing that a neighbour's car was being hijacked. The details were reported to the SSG Client Service Centre (CSC) and an alert was sent out to all SSG Tactical personnel in the vicinity. As fate would have it, the SSG GM noticed the very car being sought speeding right past him moments after the CSC notified all personnel!

The SSG executive gave chase and was immediately able to request SAPS back-up thanks to the excellent working relationship that SSG and the SAPS enjoy. A shoot-out ensued as the men in blue joined their SSG colleagues and this resulted in the hijacked car being abandoned as things heated up.

The suspects presumably escaped on foot. However, even though they were not immediately apprehended, they will no doubt think twice before contemplating further criminal acts within SSG Tactical's territory.

SAPS holds two day operation (2 February 2011)
A two day special operation between members of the Edenvale SAPS, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and various security providers kicked off on Friday morning.

During the briefing before the operation, Lt Col Robbie Roberts said that the operation would focus on problematic crime areas within Edenvale.

"There has been an increase in the number of motor vehicle thefts, business break-ins and residential burglary cases reported," Lt Col Roberts said.

"The avenues are still the main contributors to the crime in Edenvale," he addes.

During the operation, members of the Edenvale SAPS, EMPD and security providers held various roadblocks and stop and search operations.

Lt Col Roberts said that everyone who participated in the operation was there to ensure the safety of the Edenvale community.

"Other areas only wish to have the relationships with the security providers that we as the Edenvale SAPS have," he added.

The operation also focused on drunk and disorderly car guards along Van Riebeeck Avenue and Eighth Avenue.

"They are a nuisance to the community and SAPS and they are a danger for people on the roads," Lt Col Roberts said.

SSG ensure that medical emergency is quickly dealt with (26 January 2011)
SSG Tactical Response members showed that there is more to what they do than just public space policing, when they answered an emergency panic signal from the Sandvale Service Station in Edenvale, earlier this month. Despite being a company that plays a leading role in the country's fight against crime, in this instance, the unit arriving on the scene had to deal with a medical emergency.

Upon arrival, the unit discovered that one of the staff members at the service station had collapsed. They immediately contacted Emer-G-Med, which dispatched an ambulance to the scene. Following this, the unit ensured that the victim was given some breathing space, by clearing the room of concerned staff members and doing their best to keep her condition stable.

Employees at the service station could only identify the victim as Lindiwe, as she was a temporary employee, who was covering for a permanent staff member that was on holiday. According to witnesses, she was in the process of cleaning up the premises when she suddenly collapsed.

Once the Emer-G-Med ambulance arrived, professional paramedics were able to stabilise her condition and ensure she was taken to the Edenvale hospital for further treatment. While there was no further insight into what had caused the employee to collapse, management and staff at the service station were assured that she was receiving quality care at the hospital and would soon be back on her feet.

Incidents such as these highlight the benefits that SSG Tactical Response teams offer to the communities in which they serve. Not only are team members thoroughly trained in a wide variety of crime fighting techniques, making them indispensible in the war on crime, but they are also capable of dealing with emergencies that fall outside of their usual ambit.

Clearly, SSG not only cares about the community, but regularly takes such caring to new levels, through demonstrable actions such as this.

SA urged to implement mercenary laws (21 December 2010)
Pretoria - South Africa was urged on Friday to complete and start enforcing all the regulations of its 2006 law preventing its citizens from becoming mercenaries.

At a press conference in Pretoria, the chairperson of the United Nations working group on mercenaries, Alexander Nikitin, said South Africa's Prohibition of Mercenary Activities and Regulation of Certain Activities in Areas of Armed Conflict Act, which was passed in 2006, was pioneering legislation, but it still needed to be successfully implemented.

"The government of South Africa should pursue its efforts to strengthen the regulatory framework for private military and security companies exporting their services abroad," he said.

The working group has spent the past nine days meeting with various government officials and ministers, including Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Another member of the working group, Jos Luis Gmez del Prado, said the United States and Britain's outsourcing of what were originally national security functions was creating a demand for private security companies and personnel.

He said the lines between security work and the traditional mercenary activities, like those of Mad Mike Hoar in the Congo in the 1960s, was becoming increasingly blurred.

Nikitin said that during the group's visit, they had been assured by the government that enforcement of the legislation would begin to take place.

Privatisation of war

"We are very unhappy with the way the UK and the US control their security activities. These are inherently state activities that are being outsourced," said Gmez del Prado.

The US ultimately did not have the manpower to go to war in Iraq and that for every legitimate military person in Iraq there was a private contractor.

"We are going towards the privatisation of war," he said.

Nikitin said the downsizing of military forces globally was creating a demand for private security firms, whose actions often ultimately violated the human rights of the citizens in the country in which they were deployed.

That same downsizing created a pool of skilled military personnel, including South Africans, from which the unregulated private security companies could draw personnel.

Gmez del Prado cited as an example the controversial company Blackwater, whose forces' actions had resulted in the wounding and deaths of several civilians in Iraq. The company became infamous for the Nisoor Square massacre that killed seventeen civilians.

"Security companies are not business as usual. They should be regulated differently," said Nikitin, adding that the South African legislation was pioneering the way in which security companies were regulated.

SAPS Patrol For Vagrants (8 December 2010)
Members of the Edenvale SAPS joined force with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), SSG, Top Security and Savika for a special operation on Thursday, November 25.

During the operation, members of the SAPS and security officers used quad bikes to patrol the field next to Linksfield Road in an attempt to bring down the number of smash-and-grab incidents.

"The operation was focused around removing vagrants which have become problematic around the intersection," acting station commander for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said.

"The number of vagrants has increased and there are no toilets which is a health risk. Adding to this many of the vagrants are living close to the highway which could result in accidents," Lt Col Roberts said.

He added that by attempting to remove the vagrants it may also reduce crime in the area.

SSG Tactical Response Gets The Gold (05 December 2010)
There's an old story that claims that ‘there’s gold in them there hills'. While this may sometimes be true, the real moral of the story is that if that gold has been illegally acquired, don't try and sell it in an area patrolled by SSG Tactical Response.

SSG Tactical Response is focused on proactive public space policing and thus plays a leading role in the country's fight against crime. The unit has officers that are trained in offensive and defensive driving, public space policing, house penetrations, supervision of access control points, crime scene management and the use of multiple weapons.

Security personnel from SSG brought their public space policing skills to bear recently, when they apprehended two suspects who were allegedly attempting to sell gold illegally in the Edenglen North area. Their suspicions were first aroused by one of the suspects, who was inquiring as to whether there were any people in the area who bought or sold gold.

Keeping an eye on the suspect, the unit followed him after he was picked up by a white Corsa bakkie and eventually stopped and searched the vehicle. The suspect was found to have a piece of gold on his person, at which point they contacted the 24-hour, technology-driven control room and requested that an investigator be sent to the scene. The South African Police Service was also informed and sent men to the area.

The two suspects have since been taken into custody and a case against them opened, once again highlighting why SSG is South Africa's premier private law enforcement consultancy and why it has such a strong reputation for excellence in the field.

In particular, it is cases such as these that show the importance of SSG’s drive to achieve success by accessing and securing first-class human capital. It is, after all, this highly trained and motivated team of crime fighters that are in the frontline of pre-empting and warding off crime in suburban areas across the nation.

SSG has a number of structured business divisions that offer specialised services to cater to a variety of needs, including forensic services, credit management and tracing, corporate maintenance, CCTV monitoring and criminal background checks.

Dealer Busted With R10 000 Of Drugs (26 November 2010)
Co-operation between the Boksburg North SAPS, the EMPD and Specialised Services Group (SSG), which is a private tactical investigation company, led to the confiscation of drugs valued at R10 000, in Witfield, on Thursday, last week.

Gerhard Venter and Mago Manual, of SSG, were initially notified of a suspicious-looking vehicle in the area and, upon further investigation, apprehended a suspected drug dealer.

When they couldn't find drugs in the vehicle, they stopped a patrolling SAPS vehicle with Const Cathy Meyer as the occupant

She investigated the scene and could also not find drugs.

"I then phoned the EMPD for assistance and the vehicle was taken to the Boksburg EMPD offices," said Meyer.

"There is was searched by sniffer dogs belonging to Insp Jaco Pienaar.

"The dogs alerted us to the inside consol where two socks filled with many small packets for drugs were found."

"After questioning the suspect it was discovered that he is a Nigerian man with a SA passport and drivers license."

Further investigation revealed that the packets container heroin, "rocks", crystal meth and "Cat".

Crime Fighting Lifts Off In Edenvale (3 November 2010)
Members of the Edenvale SAPS were joined in a special operation by officers from Specialised Services Group (SSG) on Friday and Saturday.

During the operation offices on the ground received air support from the SSG helicopter.

Mr Gert Olivier from SSG told the NEWS during the operation that after consulting members of the SAPS, it was found that criminal activity in the area significantly drops for a period of time following operations in the area.

"Without the help of the SAPS and Mr Dennis Hoines we would not have been able to pull off the operation," Mr Olivier said.

He added that the Edenvale SAPS and Mr Hoines were instrumental in securing the landing rights for the helicopter.

Breakthrough Arrest By Edenvale SAPS (27 October 2010)
Members of the Edenvale SAPS arrested three men on Tuesday morning last week in connection with a house robbery in Elma Park and several housebreaking incidents in the Edenvale Area.

Following up on information, the Edenvale SAPS and investigators from Specialised Services Group (SSG) arrested the men in Alexandra shortly after sunrise.

Members of the SAPS were also able to recover several large flat screen television sets and other household valuables including a coffee maker, a Playstation 3 and a firearm.

"Some of the goods recovered have already been identified by residents," acting spokesperson for Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said.

He added that the men could be linked to a house robbery which took place in Elma Park recently and previous house burglaries in the area.

While being searched at the Edenvale Police Station, one of the men was also found to be in possession of several ecstasy tablets.

The men now face charges of house robbery, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of drugs.

The Edenvale SAPS are urging members of the community who may be able to identify some of the goods to visit the Edenvale Police Station.

"It is great that the SAPS and security providers have the same goals in mind when it comes to fighting crime in the area," Lt Col Roberts said. Anyone who may have more information can contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Geoff de Beer, on 082 805 6121.

The Times Newspaper - SSG Tactical in Dowerglen Ext 4 (18 October 2009)
SOFTWARE MIGHT BE THE ANSWER TO SUBURBAN ROBBERIES

Violent robberies in normally quiet suburbs could be dealt a blow if the police take a leaf from the blueprint used by private security companies, experts say.

In Dowerglen extension 4 in Edenvale, east of Johannesburg, a security company's intervention has brought down armed attacks from up to seven a week to zero in the past eight months.

Gert Olivier, an executive from the Specialised Services Group, said this was made possible by using technology - in the form of a computer program called Memex.

It is also used by the SA Insurance Crime Bureau.

The technology, described by international law-enforcement agencies as the leader in criminal intelligence, boasts an ability to "predict, prevent and respond" to criminal activity.

The FBI, the London Metropolitan Police and New Jersey State Police in the US also use the program.

"We work closely with the Edenvale SAPS. With their support, we have been able to implement this technology and processes that have seem crime plummet in the areas we cover," said Olivier.

"The software was used simply to input the details about the crimes, about the suspects and about the victoms. Using all the details acquired through arrests, statements, eye witnesses and effetive investigation, we were able to identify syndicates and criminals."

Even information that people think is irrelevant, such as big biceps, green eyes, even time of day is used by the system," says Olivier of the successes in Edenvale.

Using all the information gathered, the computer program then links suspects to each other and enables investigators to identify crime trends and this information is passed onto the policy to carry out arrests. This is crime prevention through deterrents rather than arrests, says Olivier.

He said the blueprint used in Edenvale could easily be rolled out to other suburbs.

SSG911 Services to Bolster your Security (17 July 2009)
SSG Tactical Response, a division of SSG Specialised Services Group, has launched its new cellphone panic button service to all residents in any geographical area where SSG Tactical has a presence. SSG Tactical will respond on receiving a panic alert to anyone using the new service, even if they do not have an alarm in their house.

The system allows users to send a panic alert to the SSG Client Services Centre as well as 4 other selected cell numbers. As the alert comes to SSG, a Tactical Response vehicle is dispatched to the designated address. At the same time, an SMS is sent to selected friends or family, notifying them that the cellphone panic alert has been pressed and they should call SSG Client Services Centre to get status reports.

"It is strongly recommended that people do not phone the person who has pushed the panic button or respond to the alert by arriving at the given address, but rather call SSG for an update. If the victim is constantly being called by friends and family, it could seriously jeopardise their safety," says SSG Tactical COO, Gert Olivier.

The system will cost R99 plus VAT per month, per household and R10 plus VAT per month for every extra cell phone that is loaded on our system. "This is ideal for the kids and maids, allowing anyone to send a panic alert from anywhere on your property," added Olivier.

SSG Tactical Officers do more than fight crime (16 July 2009)
SSG Tactical Response officers Peter Zulu and Ocean Moloi responded to a panic button alert from Mrs Denham this week and arrived minutes later to find her lying on her bed with severe breathing difficulties. The officers helped stabilise her by administering her medication and oxygen pump before calling for an ambulance which took her to Highlandsfield Hospital. She returned to the M.O.T.H. complex the same day sprightly as ever with nothing but praise for the two officers whose speedy reaction introduced a positive element into what could have been a tragedy.

FinWeek article: "Taking corruption out of corporations" by Jade Menezies (25 June 2009)
ROOT OUT CRIME at all costs. That's the advice from members of the Specialised Services Group (SSG), a private law enforcement agency involved in uncovering some of South Africa's most infamous corporate scandals. Its recent victory ,came after a client asked it to investigate a suspicious investment scheme. Through its investigation, SSG was able to expose one of SA's largest Ponzi schemes, allegedly created by Barry Tannenbaum. Yet that's just one of its many breakthroughs.

Although the group has only been operating in its current structure for two years, its top management team has been involved in the investigative industry for more than two decades. Throughout that time two things have remained true: every crime can be solved and businesses are often responsible for perpetuating criminal behaviour.

"If you want to fundamentally turn the country around, you have to go balls to the wall – and it starts with corporates," says SSG group executive Warren Goldblatt. "Businesses have to stop sweeping issues under the carpet."

Here's where SSG comes in. "We do anything that's peripheral to your business, from cleaning and guarding to specialised investigations," says marketing director David Marshall. "We want to help you run your business more effectively."

Although the group consists of nine separate divisions, its forensic consultants and business intelligence division are central to helping corporations root our corruption and plug security breaches. In 1997 SSG received its first high-profile client – Vodacom.

SSG has also been involved in investigating various high-profile kidnappings, including the 2004 Leigh Matthews case. It was also pivotal in the Brett Kebble saga. "We're involved in massive cases," says Goldblatt. "If you look at some of the biggest cases in this country, you'll find we've been involved."

Within its intelligence division individuals who are experts in their respective fields are chosen to work together on specific cases. With the help of Memex, a computer program used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency in the United States, SSG can gather intelligence and deliver results. But results aren't always followed up by clients.

"Our biggest frustration is the apathy of businesses. It's the biggest contributor to crime in this country," says Goldblatt. "Some businesses take crime very seriously and have a zero tolerance policy. Other businesses claim to have a zero tolerance policy but do nothing when they could be doing a whole lot more to combat fraud. They only do it retrospectively rather than proactively. Big business's apathy helps perpetuate the problem, because it simply doesn't want the aggravation of dealing with it."

For those clients wanting to take matters further, the group assists with arrests and prosecutions. Hand-in-hand with the South African Police Service, the group can support clients with matters from "the cradle to the grave", says Marshall.

That partnership between public and private institutions is the future for combating crime, says Goldblatt. "Initially the police believed that in order to accept our existence they had to acknowledge the failure of their system. But that's not true. Anywhere in the world there’s a limit to resources and manpower. And the SAPS is no different."

Despite its relationship with the police, State mechanisms are another frustration. "We'd like to move faster than mechanisms of State can move," says Goldblatt. After matters have been postponed numerous times, witnesses disappear, crucial evidence is lost and cases weaken until they're withdrawn, says group executive Gert Olivier.

But there will always be another fraudster, another client and another mandate. "Society is driven by material goods and getting the next best thing," says Olivier. "The Tannenbaum scheme and 90% of the matters we deal with boil down to the Big G – greed."

Says Goldblatt: "If Tannenbaum is found guilty of fraud, then some of his biggest investors are just as culpable. But they kept quiet because of human greed and the need to protect themselves. At some point someone has to be honest and say 'no more'. Those people are our clients."

Says Olivier: "A silent justice has already been achieved. Potential investors have been saved."

Take control of what happens to your estate (10 March 2009)
Irrespective of your age and health, it is imperative you put a legally-sound will in place right now so that you are able to control what happens to your property and assets after your death.

That's according to Kim Yochum, head of SSG Credit Management, a division of Specialised Services Group (SSG). He said that many South Africans neglect to put in place a will that is up to date and valid to protect their loved ones' interests after they die. The tragic result is that their dying wishes are not carried out meaning a lifetime of labour fails to benefit family and friends as was its purpose.

Mr Yochum pointed to the case of an elderly lady who bequeathed money to her loyal and trusted gardener when she died. Because she had left a rock-solid will in place, the trustees responsible for the will were empowered to trace the man and ensure that the proceeds of the estate reached him. Unfortunately, while the will was legally-binding, it was not up to date with the gardener’s current contact details and address and SSG Credit Management was approached to trace the man. He was eventually located through his old pass number which SSG managed to convert into an ID number with the help of Home Affairs. He was in his eighties and living in a far-flung rural area subsisting on the most meagre of incomes to the extent that he did not even have a bank account. SSG helped him to set up a bank account and the man promptly received the legacy due to him. He was so grateful he continued to contact the company for several months afterward to express his appreciation for his much-improved quality of life.

If his former employer had died intestate her money would most probably never have reached the intended beneficiary who clearly was in dire need of assistance in order to live out the last part of his life in some measure of comfort.

Mr Yochum said that there are at least four major reasons to ensure that you have a solid will in place:
  • Through a will, you are able to direct who will receive your property, the amount that each should receive, and whether a trust needs to be created to house any of your assets. If you have no will, the state will make these decisions for you. In addition, without a sound will in place, family squabbles might arise as your loved ones try to determine how you would want your assets divided between them. The process of distributing your assets might also take longer than it would with a will in place, leaving loved ones stranded without finances for months.
  • You will be able to appoint someone you know and trust as executor of your estate. This person will ensure that your directions are carried out quickly and accurately. If you leave no will, the State will choose an executor for you, perhaps appointing someone who will not act according to your intentions.
  • You will be able to leave special instructions, including appointing guardians for your children and making provisions for loved ones that are in ill health. You might want to leave some of your estate to a person who is not related to you by blood or to a charity. Without a will, your estate will be distributed to your nearest relatives, and the person assigned as guardian to your children may not be the person you would have chosen.
  • A will allows you to take steps reduce the taxes on your estate so that your loved ones benefit more than the tax man. If you die intestate, the government will inevitably take a large cut of your estate.

SSG Tactical acquires the business of Vis Gladius (17 June 2009)
SSG Tactical, a division of Specialised Services Group (SSG), has acquired the business of Vis Gladius, an armed response company that operates in Brits, northern Pretoria and the surrounding rural areas.

SSG Tactical took ownership of Vis Gladius after it bought the business's assets and customer base and also offered employment contracts to high-performing members of the Vis Gladius operational and management team.

"This deal makes perfect sense for SSG Tactical as well as for the customers and staff of Vis Gladius," said Gert Olivier, executive at SSG Tactical.

"The acquisition of Vis Gladius allows us to add the company's 3,500 clients to our customer base. Vis Gladius customers, meanwhile, will benefit from our proactive public space policing approach and from the complementary services we offer through other members of the SSG group."

Vis Gladius was a well-managed company with good operational skills before it was put into liquidation as a result of a legal dispute with a competitor. "The merger of the Vis Gladius business into SSG Tactical means that we are running a larger operation with the same overheads which makes good business sense," Mr Olivier added.

The SSG Group offers services such as corporate investigations, events management, credit management, cleaning and guarding that Vis Gladius did not provide to its clients, offering customers in the region a more comprehensive, single-stop solution.

The transaction took effect on December 23 2008.

SSG Tactical is differentiated by its Public Space Policing programme, which is a proactive approach to safety that aims to make people feel safe in the areas they live in. The approach focuses on taking back the streets from the criminals so that people feel safe in their neighbourhoods, and not just in their homes.

SSG Tactical combines state-of-the-art software and systems with highly trained officers, all-terrain vehicles and a technology driven 24 hour control room to ensure the safety of its customers.

SSG Bolsters neighbourhood presence with R1.8 Million Invesment (25 March 2009)
SSG Tactical Response, the proactive crime-fighting division of Specialised Services Group, has kept its promise to beleaguered Edenvale, Pretoria, Hartebeestpoort Dam, Brits and West Rand residents by making a R1,8 million investment in new fully equipped patrol vehicles.

The vehicles will boost SSG Tactical's ability to rapidly respond to crime-related incidents while also improving the company’s ability to proactively police public spaces in the area. “Proactive public space policing is a philosophy which dictates that we safeguard entire neighbourhoods and not just the four walls within which our clients live,” explained Dave Albert, Chief Operating Officer of SSG Tactical Response.

"In this way the whole suburb benefits whenever SSG moves into the area," he said.

SSG Tactical Response took delivery of the 10 new Nissan Hardbody Hi Rider vehicles last week and they are already branded with SSG livery and are being deployed in suburbs across the East Rand, Pretoria and the West Rand. All SSG response vehicles are purposely aggressively-styled and the new units are no different. "SSG vehicles are intimidating to criminals and it's no coincidence that our colour of choice is white with black and silver branding. Its common sense that an imposing high-visibility and strikingly-branded vehicle has more of a presence than a blue VW Citi Golf or a white Nissan bakkie," said Mr Albert.

SSG Tactical Response plans to acquire additional vehicles in the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup which will add to its current fleet of 21 vehicles. According to Mr Albert, "The 2010 local organising committee has impressive security arrangements in place with stadia and CBDs adequately protected. However, scant attention has been paid to the suburbs where many foreigners are likely to visit. Our plan is to boost SSG Tactical’s presence in neighbourhoods across South Africa so that in the short term 2010 visitors are protected and in the long term our own citizens feel safe."

South Africa's largest corporate investigation group, SSG provides a wide spectrum of services structured around community, business & asset guarding, corporate investigations, event security, personal protection, corporate cleaning & maintenance as well as debt collection & tracing. SSG's recipe for crime-busting success rests of on the two pillars of technology and human expertise.  SSG Foils Housebreaking & Apprehendes Suspect (18 March 2009)
SSG Tactical's march against crime in the Dowerglen area paid off once again for residents after a housebreaking suspect was apprehended in the vicinity of Bush Willow Street.

Effective and proactive public space policing resulted in an SSG tactical unit spotting two criminals attempting to break through a fence adjacent to an open area which they had also tried to do the week before.

The SSG tactical unit called for back-up from another SSG tactical unit which had been strategically stationed nearby. Officers from both units gave chase along the river and after a protracted chase during which the suspects were doggedly pursued, one of them was successfully apprehended. It is expected that the apprehended suspect, whose name has been withheld from the article, will ultimately lead SSG and the SAPS to the second suspect.

"Proactive public space policing is all about helping residents to take the streets back from criminals so that they can feel safe in the suburbs they live in," said Dave Albert, Chief Operating Officer of SSG Tactical. "In the past, armed response helped people to feel safe in their homes. We are helping them to feel safe in their streets and suburbs as well as this latest case illustrates," he added.

The SSG approach to public space policing brings together a range of disciplines and technologies to ensure that the streets and public spaces such as parks are safe. The policing of a residential area is divided into public space policing and first responders for domestic alarm signals. Exit and entries into the residential area are controlled through area access control points where well-trained security officers take registration and telephone numbers from visitors and monitor the area for suspicious vehicles, people and activities.

They are supported by all-terrain tactical vehicles containing a minimum of two heavily armed officers. These officers are trained in disciplines such as offensive and defensive driving, public space policing, house penetrations, supervision of access control points, crime scene management and multiple weapons.

Focus on Public Space Policing Pays Off for Dowerglen (18 February 2009)
SSG Tactical's specific emphasis on proactive public space policing has delivered dividends in the form of a recent arrest in Dowerglen for possession of stolen goods and possession of dagga.

The suspect was apprehended by SSG Tactical's highly-trained officers after he was found walking from a park towards First Avenue. "SSG's focus on turning entire neighbourhoods into safe zones by proactively questioning any suspicious characters and not only reactively responding to crimes in progress was the reason another criminal now finds himself behind bars awaiting trial," said Gert Olivier, Executive at SSG Tactical, a division of Specialised Services Group (SSG).

The suspect was in possession of goods allegedly stolen from a house in Bush Willow Street and he is also suspected of dealing in drugs after 20 matchboxes of dagga were found on him.

"The problem of managing and reducing crime in South Africa's suburbs and neighbourhoods demands a proactive and integrated approach that goes far beyond reactive alarm monitoring and armed response," explained Mr Olivier.

Proactive public space policing is all about helping residents to take the streets back from criminals so that they can feel safe in the suburbs they live in. In the past, armed response helped people to feel safe in their homes. SSG wants them to feel safe in their streets and suburbs as well.

Pensioner Severely Assaulted by Neighbourhood Security Firm (30 March 2009)
SSG Tactical Response, the proactive crime-fighting division of Specialised Services Group (SSG), this afternoon (approx. 14h30) stopped a vicious assault on a 70-year old Hartbeespoort Dam pensioner employed part time by the company.

Johnny van Rooyen was going about his job marketing SSG Tactical Response services when his former employer, the owner of another security firm in the area,

assaulted him. Holding company SSG enjoys an unrivalled reputation and personnel within the SSG Group boast more than 150 years of combined law enforcement experience and include former Scorpions, State Advocates, Prosecutors and top ex-SAPS personnel.

Hannes Potgieter, the owner of Paracops, arrived at Van Der Hof Street in Kameeldrift West and proceeded to assault Mr Van Rooyen so severely he feared for his life and called SSG Tactical Response units for assistance. Several SSG units arrived, including the highly-trained dog unit, and prevented the assault on Mr Van Rooyen in a disciplined and professional manner.

By 15h00, a crowd of well over 50 individuals had gathered in the street in the Hartbeespoort suburb and SSG has acted swiftly to restore order in cooperation with the local SAPS. The company is assisting Mr Van Rooyen to lay charges against Mr Potgieter.

Reclaiming SA's streets with proactive public policing (18 March 2009)
Private security firms have expanded their role from simply providing reactive armed response services to clients to providing proactive public space policing services that turn entire neighbourhoods into safe zones.

That's according to Gert Olivier, Executive at SSG Tactical Response, a division of Specialised Services Group (SSG). He said that the problem of managing and reducing crime in South Africa's suburbs and neighbourhoods demands a proactive and integrated approach that goes far beyond reactive alarm monitoring and armed response.

"Proactive public space policing is all about helping residents to take the streets back from criminals so that they can feel safe in the suburbs they live in," he added. "In the past, armed response helped people to feel safe in their homes. We want them to feel safe in their streets and suburbs as well."

Olivier said that proactive public space policing enhances quality of life by giving people more freedom and breathing space within their neighbourhoods. The fact that proactive public space policing makes people feel safe in their suburbs means that they are more likely to get out of their homes to take strolls and walk their dogs. In turn, the increased visibility of people confidently enjoying their lives helps to make neighbourhoods even safer.

The SSG approach to public space policing brings together a range of disciplines and technologies to ensure that the streets and public spaces such as parks are safe. The policing of a residential area is divided into public space policing and first responders for domestic alarm signals.  SSG The right medicine for ripped-off pharmacy (18 January 2009)
South Africa's biggest corporate investigation group, Specialised Services Group (SSG), has recovered R29 million worth of generic medicines stolen in a R48 million robbery last month at a wholesale pharmacy in Meadowvale, East of Johannesburg.Proprietors Pieter van Graan and Dan Mazibuko congratulated SSG on the investigation which ultimately fingered their own security company.“Both the guard at the pharmacy gate and the armed response guard simply allowed the suspects to drive into the premises and load millions of rands worth of stock into three trucks and drive off unhindered,” said Mazibuko.Working in conjunction with SAPS Organised Crime East Rand, SSG was able to entrap the criminal syndicate by purchasing samples of the stolen medicines under lawful circumstances and by tracking the goods via a satellite tracking device. Eventually, four suspects were arrested and are currently awaiting trial.

Positive spin-offs of the investigation include the discovery of a chop-shop as well as the arrest of several illegal immigrants. In the wake of yet another inside job, SSG Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mitchell Graaff posed the question, "The Independent Complaints Directorate polices the police but who is responsible for ensuring that the private security industry is not infiltrated by crime syndicates?"Prior to solving the Meadowvale case SSG and the SAPS had together arrested several guards employed by the same security firm to patrol a suburb South of Johannesburg. "We're seeing the same rotten egg firms crop up time and time again.

Typically, a well-run security outfit is sold by the original owner and subsequently managed so badly that guards with criminal records are unwittingly employed. The firm is infiltrated virtually overnight and becomes a danger to the community it is contracted to protect," said Mr Graaff. The question should be asked whether or not guards found to be guilty of criminal misconduct by the firm are prosecuted as well as dismissed. Unfortunately, most private security firms do not have access to the in-house investigative abilities of the SSG group of companies.

According to Mr Graaff both business and domestic clients of guarding and armed response firms need to ensure that proper background tests are done on the firm's new recruits and this includes using fingerprint testing to check for criminal records. SSG provides a wide spectrum of security services structured around community, business & asset guarding, event security, personal protection and corporate investigations.

Tenacity pays off for Bryanston crime victim (06 October 2008)
Bryanston resident Nicolas Green* wasn't going to let a ruthless gang invade the sanctity of his home, assault and terrify his family and then get away scot-free to do the same to other innocent homeowners. In what can only be described as an operation coordinated with military precision, Mr Green, Specialised Services Group SSG), the SA Police Services (SSG), tracking firm Tracetec and various individuals including eBlockwatch’s Andre Snyman all worked together to recently arrest several criminal syndicate members in Tembisa after a high-speed vehicle chase.

Currently in custody and awaiting trial, the criminals were linked with other house robberies and home invasions they had perpetrated in Norwood while out on bail. It all started on Friday, 18 July when Mr Green was watching television in the lounge of his Russel Road home. Also present at the family home were his daughter and their domestic helper. As happens so often in communities across South Africa, Mr Green’s enjoyment of the sanctity of his own home was rudely interrupted by the sight of a group of armed men standing in his lounge. The men bundled Mr Green and a family member into the main bedroom and after cable tying them, the criminals brought the domestic worker into the same room. Another family member had the misfortune to arrive home shortly afterwards and she was severely assaulted for no apparent reason."Being able to do absolutely nothing while my family was being traumatised in front of my very eyes filled me with equal measures of despair and rage.

It was at that point that I decided we had to live through this experience because I was going to make these thugs pay," said Mr Green. He continued: "It was a strange thing. I almost felt that the desire to avenge my family's pain became my primary reason to live through the ordeal."The gang ransacked the home and what surprised Mr Green is that they paid particular attention to certain items and seemed to know where many of the more valuable household contents were. "It was as if they came prepared with a shopping list and they even thought to bring a four tonne truck to cart everything away," he commented.Once the ordeal was over and the gang had departed, the family freed themselves and the police were called.

The SAPS spent a week meticulously collecting evidence, taking statements and doing the groundwork involved in the case. After a discussion with personal friend Andre Snyman, founder of eBlockwatch, Mr Green decided to play his part in the war against crime by personally securing the services of SSG. The Group provides a wide spectrum of security services structured around community, business & asset guarding, event security, personal protection and corporate investigations. "Nicolas felt that it was his duty to help speed up the investigation so that the police could concentrate on solving other pressing cases in the area," said Mitchell Graaff, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SSG. Mr Graaff mentioned that the SAPS and SSG have a long record of fighting crime together. "Because many of our personnel are former SAPS members we have a special affinity for the police service and we find our two organisations work very well together." During the investigation, indications were that either the domestic worker or one of her relatives was involved in the robbery. For example, her cellphone had rung during the ordeal and the robbers had not taken it from her or attempted to see who was calling, the driveway gate was not forced meaning someone had to open it for the gang to enter, the virtual 'shopping list' indicated an inside job, and finally, the clincher was that the domestic worker revealed during interrogation that her son was a burglar and that he might have been involved. Working as a closely-knit team, SSG and the SAPS moved the investigation into top gear by placing the domestic worker's son under surveillance, monitoring the movements of Mr Green's stolen vehicle via satellite and examining the cellphone records of people associated with the domestic worker's son. Finally, it was time to swoop and together with Mr Green's satellite tracking firm and the SAPS, the vehicle was followed, chased and recovered in Tembisa.

The car rolled and four suspects fled the scene. Items in the car were seized and identified as the property of the Green family further building on what was becoming a watertight case. Eventually, one of the suspects decided it was in his best interest to come clean and his statement implicated all the other suspects in what serves as a classic example of the old adage "Crime doesn’t pay". On the relationship between the SAPS and corporate investigation firms such as SSG, Mr Graaff commented that South Africa was seeing the emergence of a new trend involving home and business owners securing the services of private companies to assist the police in their investigations. "The police appreciate the extra manpower and expertise corporate investigation firms provide. Because we do much of the groundwork the police are able to focus on following up and processing the evidence we provide," he said.SSG's recipe for crime-busting success rests of the two pillars of technology and expertise. Personnel within the SSG Group boast more than 150 years of combined law enforcement experience. "We employ a former head of the SAPS 10 111 call centre, a former head of the Pretoria Commercial Crime Unit, an ex-Scotland Yard officer, ex-Scorpions, a former State Prosecutor, as well as advocates, forensic auditors, chartered accountants and others."Regarding SSG's technological superiority, the company uses the same software to link different elements of criminal activity as the US Department of Homeland Security, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, The US Army, the US Central Intelligence Agency and the UK's Scotland Yard. "This software is the product of choice for the world's leading anti-crime and anti-terrorist organisations and SSG holds more user licenses than any other organisation on the African continent," concluded Mr Graaff.

Most household fires can be avoided (20 May 2009)
SSG Tactical Response, a division of Specialised Services Group (SSG), saved a household in Marais Steyn Park in Edenvale from possible disaster when its tactical officers responded to a fire alert recently.

The SSG control centre dispatched the officers to the house after it received a panic alert in the afternoon. When they arrived at the home, the two officers were informed by the maid that there was a fire in the study.

Using their fire extinguishers, the officers managed to douse the flames. Upon investigation they found that the fire may have been caused by a faulty plug on a computer.

"In this case, the fire was brought under control without anyone getting hurt and with minimal damage to the home," said Dave Albert, Chief Operating Officer of SSG Tactical Response.

"However, many South Africans are unaware of the fire hazards in their homes, and could be exposing themselves, their families and their property to unnecessary danger." Albert offers a few fire safety tips for home owners that can help to prevent most residential fires:

*Use your common sense. Don't smoke in bed, for example, and check that all plug installations are safe. Avoid overloading plugs, and make sure heaters (especially gas paraffin heaters) are kept far away from flammable materials and place them in positions where animals or children are unlikely to knock them over. Do not leave burning candles unattended.

*Make special effort to maintain your electrical appliances. Replace all worn, old, frayed or damaged appliance cords immediately.

*Be especially careful in the kitchen. Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires - it's full of ways for a fire to start. A toaster flare-up, food left unsupervised on a stove or in an oven (especially boiling oil), grease spills, or a piece of loose clothing flapping against a hot plate are just some of the risks.

*Educate children about fire and its dangers, and make sure that you store matches, lighters and flammable materials safely away from their eager hands. Don't allow children to cook without supervision.

*Keep your fireplace clean and cover it with a screen to stop sparks from leaping out. Don't burn anything besides wood or coal in a fireplace because paper and other materials can escape while burning and ignite nearby items.

*Be ready for any accidents by having fire extinguishers strategically placed around your house. With a fire extinguisher at hand, you will be able to prevent most small fires from turning into big ones. Learn how to use and test your fire extinguisher before you actually need to use it in a real-life crisis.

To use a fire extinguisher: Pull the pin with the nozzle pointing away from you. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.

Sweep the nozzle from side to side while squeezing the lever slowly.

*As unlikely as it is that you will fall victim to a fire if you follow the tips above, it's wise to have a contingency plan just in case. Plan escape routes from every room in the house and teach them to your children. Remember to stay low on the floor when leaving the home.

Fire Training Saved Norwood Mall (6 March 2009)
The fact that a Spear Security Group officer had received fire prevention training just one month prior prevented the Norwood Mall from going up in smoke after a recent fire at the Step Ahead shoe store.

"A minor fire could have become a major incident if it were not for our decision to hire a quality guarding operation which invests resources in equipping its officers with a wide range of skills," said Sheree Wedlake of Norwood Mall management.

Spear Security Group, a division of Specialised Services Group (SSG), had sent one of the security officers responsible for safeguarding the mall, Ronnie Mwelase, on a fire prevention training course a month before he noticed that a cash register in one of the shops had caught alight, due to a presumed electrical short.

After the alarm was raised, Spear's security personnel from the surrounding posts immediately responded while the company’s controllers followed procedures and immediately informed management and the fire department.

"I knew exactly what kind of fire extinguisher to use because of my fire training and I knew how to check if the fire was properly extinguished. I specifically remember the instructor explaining when to use a water-based extinguisher and a CO2-based extinguisher which is what I used because it was an electrical fire. I'm very pleased that I was able to save the shop from going up in flames," said Mwelase.

Geoff Schapiro, Mwelase's Managing Director, complimented and praised his employee mentioning that "He could easily have run to the safety of the parking area and called the fire brigade from there. Instead, Ronnie took the initiative to break down the door of the shop and successfully extinguished what could have turned into a raging inferno, risking lives and property."

After the fire was extinguished, the night shift security officers and cleaners worked together to successfully ensure that the mall was ready to trade at nine o'clock sharp the very next morning.

TESTIMONIALS involving SSG Tactical

We are not just another armed response service provider. We believe we add value to our client relationships and are happy to go the extra mile to ensure their safety.

Here are some of our client testimonials:

From: Candice Dunn - Thank You!!!
Dear SSG,

This is a note ( although late it is not forgotten) to say Thank you!!!

On the morning of the 17th July 2011, SSG Tactical unit assisted me with a emergency medical rescue situation. The prompt arrival of SSG when activating the panic alarm as well as the speedy arrival of the Emergi Med was phenomenal and contributed to my husband's recovery today.

Thank you for your community efforts and compassion. Without your help - it would have a difficult situation.

From: Dower Home Owners Association - Commendation to Vusi
Dear Riaan

It is with pleasure that we write to commend one of your Guards, Vusi, who does Dower Glen Ext 4 proud at the Essenhout Entrance.

For a number of years now SSG has been our preferred Security Company guarding our entrance gates, signing in-and-out of visitors as well as a vehicle patrolling our suburb on a 24 hour basis. Since SSG has been in our area we have had no incidents of crime and in particular we commend Vusi for his diligence and keen perception to prevent any likely incident.

His friendliness, neatness and astuteness is hard to come by and as a committee we know also that he has taken the brunt of many abusive resident and visitor alike – he has never buckled!

Vusi knows the rules, he never breaks them – he is courteous to all but he does his job to the book! We have never seen him do anything that would make us question what he does, he goes the extra mile to catch the perpetrator (and Vusi knows what I mean!) and that goes a long way in my book!

As a committee that rely on the SSG guards to support the work we do to keep our Road Closure safe and in-tact, we can honestly say that we Vusi is one of a kind!

Please don't ever take him away unless he has trained at least ten more like him and then only to make him the MD or similar!!

From: Charmaine Tavares - Compliments to SSG
Dear Leigh and the technical team of SSG,

I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude for the very professional manner in which SSG has managed our recent move from 9 to 39 Laboria Road, Isandovale.

There were obviously going to be teething problems but I am extremely impressed by SSG's attitude in sorting out any issues we have had. Other companies would have charged us for the innumerable false alarms at our new home due to these teething problems, but SSG have come through shining! Many thanks to you for assisting in getting the technical team out to our house (on more than one occasion) and thanks especially to Anton for his patience and commitment to getting it right.

From a very satisfied customer - thanks a lot!

From: Michael Anderson - Very well done
Hi Riaan

People are always quick to complain but very few take the time to write a compliment, so here goes.

Today at about 11:30 we heard a massive explosion and heard a woman scream. We ran into the street and saw smoke billowing from a house down the road out of our enclosed suburb. So I pushed the panic button and told the office staff when SSG calls to send them to fire and call for Fire Department.

I called Fire Department and asked them to come.

On arrival at house there was a VW Combi Under the carport In front of garage and next to house Fully engulfed in fire. The old resident of the house was trying to put fire out with a garden hose and getting nowhere.

Chubb had followed me to scene and neither of their cars had fire extinguishers. Not long afterwards TAC 2 arrived at the house and I asked if I could use his fire extinguisher. This gave us a us all the help we needed to break the fire and the garden hose was sufficient to put the rest out. It then became evident that there was a 9kg gas bottle on the front seat, so the urgency of the matter just became very real. The fire department arrived some time later after the fire was out and I truly believe that if it was not for the fact that your TAC vehicles carry fire extinguishers the damage would have been far worse and may even have spread to the house, not to mention the possibility that the gas bottle could have exploded.

Several more TAC vehicles responded to the incident and it was very encouraging and heartwarming to know that we don't have to rely of the disfunctioning government departments for service delivery especially in the case of emergencies.

Well done guys.

From: Craig Krummeck - Holy Rosary
Hi Ollie

We chatted a week ago regarding problems that I had experienced with your control room managers. You got Geoff to call me and assist me in arranging SSG’S visibility at the Holy Rosary pre- school entrance in the mornings and afternoons. I would just like to thank you for your and his impeccable customer service , the manner in which he sorted my frustrations out was done with such enthusiasm and urgency. I see your response vehicle every morning when I drop my daughter off and every afternoon when I collect her.

You have a great team and your business deserves every success !!

Have a great day

 From: Judy Karam - Compliment
Dear SSG,

I never take the time to write about good service (we have the intention but time is always against us) but I have to mention a good Samaritan, who happens to be one of your staff, that came to my aid why a broke down on the side of the R24 (just before the Edenvale turn off) on Monday, 21/02/11 at about 13h30 (he drives a silver Mazda 3). I unfortunately can't remember his name or I heard wrong but I think it was a gentlemen called Peet... Surname started with S and I think he does the security for one of your big corporates, also starting with an S...

He stayed with me until help arrived, being a Monday, I am sure he had better things to do but he kindly gave up some of his time to ensure my safety came first.

Our residential area recently became SSG members and thanks to Peet he has "swung" my support towards your company!

Thank you Peet!

From: Gary Damerell - Compliments to SSG
We had an incident at Leisure View Village in the early hours of Sunday morning (08 August) wherein a panic alarm went off in unit B9. SSG control room norified me of this and within seconds, I had your tac vehicle on the phone informing me of the situation.

Long story short, Sheryl and I went up to the village and as we could not gain access into the unit and we could see the lady lying in her bed (looking very pale and not stirring) we made the call to break the lock on the security gate and get in that way. Thank heavens it turned out that the resident was fine and must have accidently activated the panic alarm as the remote was around her neck- she is deaf so could not hear us calling her or what was going on around her.

Your reaction officers as well as Emer-G-imed were fantastic throughout this whole incident and really handled the situation well.

Please pass this email on to the relevant parties so that the staff who were involved get due praise.

It is pleasing to know that this kind of service exists.

Coupled to this incident, we also had SSG respond to calls in the Eastleigh Ridge area this past weekend on 2 attempts of armed break ins. Once again, all concerend were really good at performing their task.

Keep well.

From: Ingrid Preston - THANK YOU!
Thank you so much to you and your team for your support over the past two days! Just knowing that you will be keeping an eye over our premises and then also physically seeing the support made all the difference to us! We have taken the necessary steps to change the frequencies and all seems to be in order.

You have an amazing team – and I am continuously impressed by their gracious attitude and extreme politeness and willingness to go the extra mile!

Thank you so much!

From: Gary Damerell - Commendations on guard at Leisure View Village
I wish to bring to your attention the outstanding service of one of your appointed guards at Leisure View Village.

Vuzzi is really on the ball and besides always being polite, he really does take his job to heart. He follows procedures at the gate and stands his ground when conducting his duties.

It is really pleasing to work with someone like this.

From: Shireen Young - Excellent Service!
I would like to put on record that we are very impressed with the service supplied by your Security Team while we were on holiday from the beginning of April until now. My parents (who are pensioners), were on their own in my cottage, were very nervous as we’ve had a lot of negative activity in the area over the past few months. I contacted your office and asked them to plse keep an eye on my home in my absence.

The guards were really fantastic and patrolled past our property several times per day. They even cross-questioned our gardener and our maid on several occasions to make sure that they were supposed to be there!

In these unsafe times, it's really great to know that you are out there looking out for us. I’d really appreciate it if you could convey this message to the guards themselves – special request from my parents.

From: Colette Hinton - Happy with Service!
I just wanted to write to you and let you know how impressed I am with SSG and the service that I have received from them since joining you.

Over the years I have never really been happy with the Security Companies that I have used for various reasons, but since joining SSG I have been more than satisfied.

I regularly get SMS's advising me of things I need to be on the lookout for and whenever our alarm goes I get a quick response too. When I have had to phone the control room I get to speak to intelligent people who actually understand my query!!!!!

The other day I noticed that the circuit breaker (or whatever you call it) was malfunctioning on my french doors, so I was forced to bypass that door when setting my alarm.

I phoned SSG to request a Service Call Out and two hours later the service guys had been, fixed the problem and had gone! This has never happened to me before and I am just so delighted that I thought I should share my satisfaction with you.

From: Lynda Hall - THANK YOU
Please can you pass on my sincere appreciation and thanks to your security officer, Takalani-Milton who found my handbag which had been stolen from me in a smash and grab incident on the morning of Wednesday 7 October. Within 2 and half hours of the incident, SSG Tactical found my bag and contacted me.

To the staff at the Linksfield office, also a big thank you, unfortunately I did not get the ladies name, but she made me coffee and arranged a panado for me as I had injured my fingers during the incident and was in pain.

Words can't describe how grateful I am that my bag was found, even though not all my possessions were returned, I managed to board the plane and get home that afternoon.

It is encouraging to know that there is a team of dedicated employees at SSG doing their best.

 From: Rebecca Ramharakh - Compliment
I was given your e-mail address by a colleague. I live in Ext 4, Dowerglen where SSG is the security company on site. I live with my 2 sons and over the December period they went away on holiday and I was alone at home for the better part of the month. Like all Johannesburgers I worked late and arrived home late, often after 10 o' clock. I must say that each time I arrived, a SSG patrol vehicle, followed me at a distance until I reached my home.

Lately, my entire family has taken up walking (to shed the Xmas kilo's) and walk in the evenings. Each evening, the patrol vehicle passes us at least a few times. I have been to other parts of Dowerglen like ext 3 and 5 and they also have security – but it is not the same.

Your guys are different – they are clean, smart and vigilant. Often I have seen them not allow access because the visitor was not sure of exactly where they were going inside Ext 4 or the visitor was using the residents gate.

I must compliment you and your management team – I feel safe in Ext4.

From: Bernadine Geldenhuys - Compliments on your sales people
I'd like to bring your attention to the wonderful and compassionate service we received last Friday from one of your sales team, Tyronne. He'd been dealing with my mom, and she felt comfortable enough to refer me to him.

I explained my situation to him. I'm a single mother (30 year old) to a little girl who's nearly 2. I bought my house November 2008 and the two of us have been living there with our zoo quite happily until the neighbours were attacked in their driveway. Now these people live so close I can literally hear them press the buttons on their microwave in the mornings. It all happened a stone's throw away from where I was dressing my daughter in my bedroom.

Then two weeks ago I took in a lady from the office. She's 32 and was very severely assaulted by her boyfriend. We definitely needed some kind of peace of mind, on the off-chance he finds her (if he’s even looking, that is).

Tyronne listened to all this with a huge amount of compassion and sympathy. He gave us quite a few safety tips, had a look at my home to gauge the sturdiness of the burglar proofing, even checked out the dogs. He noticed all my cats and could amend his offer accordingly.

All in all, if your whole team at SSG is as competent and confident in your company I'm very glad to be signing on with you. None of the other "protection service" companies out there inspired much confidence, just judging by the state of their vehicles and pure sloppiness of their behaviour and uniforms. I think that's why I've been dragging my feet that long finding another company I could put the safety of my baby girl and myself into.

Thank you again!

 From: Eden Park Trustees
After signing up with SSG a few days ago, we experienced two incidences at our Townhouse Complex, and we had to unfortunately call out the armed response.

We would like to sat that the service we had was absolutely phenomenal, the staff are very well trained and very professional in their dealings with the situations that occured.

We would have no hesitation in recommending SSG to any of the Townhouse Complexes/Houses in Isandovale and Eden Glen.

To each and everyone working for SSG, we would like to take this opportunity in thanking you for the great work that you are doing in our suburb.

Please keep up the good work.
